Soil remediation is a technical measure to restore the normal function of polluted soil. In the soil remediation industry, there are over 100 existing soil remediation technologies and more than ten commonly used techniques, which can be roughly divided into three methods: physical, chemical, and biological. Since the 1980s, many countries in the world, especially developed countries, have formulated and carried out plans for the treatment and restoration of polluted soil, thus forming an emerging soil remediation industry.

China's soil pollution prevention and control is entering the first "International Year of Soil" of the United Nations with labels such as "high pollution exceeding standards", "trillion level market", "complex system engineering", and "emerging industries in the early stages of development".

According to the "National Soil Pollution Status Survey Bulletin" released in 2014, the overall soil environment in China is not optimistic, with a national soil pollution exceeding standard rate of 16.1%. While the soil environment problems in abandoned industrial and mining land are prominent, the quality of farmland soil environment is even more worrying. Faced with the severe situation of soil pollution, the speed of national legislation has significantly accelerated. In addition to adding soil remediation content to the new Environmental Protection Law, the Ministry of Environmental Protection recently released a new draft of the Soil Environmental Quality Standards, and the development and implementation of the Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (referred to as the "Ten Measures") have also been put on the agenda. The large-scale soil pollution exceeding the standard, coupled with the promotion of national legislation, is expected to give rise to a trillion level soil remediation market in the industry. However, many experts have stated that although the cake is large, we cannot be blindly optimistic. Due to multiple barriers such as technology, funding, and business models, it is not realistic for the soil remediation industry to grow in a short period of time.
